You have a wedding coming up. You need a cake, you want it to taste good, and you don’t want the standard white tiered confection with a stiff bride and groom planted on top. But what do you want? You decided on the man – that was hard enough. Let us – more specifically, let a Thumbtack pro – help you with the cake.
If you’re surgically attached to your gaming console, cake themes like Mario Brothers are oddly pervasive. You can also go with animal print, rainbow, boldly-colored stripes, or cascades of Oreo cookies. Maybe you met your beloved at Coney Island – if so, may we suggest cones of cotton candy bursting through the layers? If you can dream it, you can eat it.
But what’s the best way to choose? We spoke with Darmayne of Sweet Confections Cakes in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It started as a hobby in her kitchen after doing a wedding cake for a friend of her daughter. Five brides attended the wedding and all wanted her to make their cakes. Fast forward to now and her cakes are being voted as the best all over her section of Pennsylvania.
“Our wedding cake designs are based on our clients’ ideas and dreams,” she says. If they have no idea what they want, Darmayne spends time with the bride to determine her style, asking about the reception venue and the wedding’s theme and colors.
“The peacock themed cake is one of our most creative,” she says. “The bride gave us freedom for the design, after letting us know she loved the pillow style we’ve done in the past. So we created a pillow cake for her wedding and incorporated the peacock theme.” If the bride has a big personality and a fondness for sparkle, Darmayne loves to go on a bling binge. She’ll even cover the cake stand in more bling. “Keeping the color simple – white or ivory – and adding color with the flowers. I love the look of gum paste flowers cascading down a cake,” she says.
Whatever your preference, someone out there can bake you the perfect cake. You just have to decide how much bling your life can withstand.
