Every bride wants to glow at her wedding. But most of us need a little cosmetic help. Even if you’re the eyeliner master, hiring a professional eases stress and allows you to relax. We interviewed Thumbtack’s best makeup professionals for tips on how to find the right artist for your big day.
How to Choose the Right Makeup Artist
“Ask for pictures of their work,” suggests beauty coach DaKyissa Hall. “Ask about their products to make sure they’re not using something bad for your skin. You don’t want to have an allergic reaction on your wedding day!”
You want to love your look, so flipping through photos of their work is key. You may also want to ask how long they’ve been a makeup artist and how many weddings they’ve done. If they seem like a good fit and you like their work, schedule a trial run. “Trial runs are the best thing you can do before your wedding,” says stylist Micah Joray. “That way everyone’s on the same page.” If you prefer a more natural look, you don’t want to discover too late that your artist has a heavy hand.
Budgeting for Makeup
Know your budget before reaching out to makeup artists. “People don’t always know what they need when planning a wedding, so they don’t know how much they have to spend for makeup,” saysDaKyissa. Be prepared so you don’t waste your time or the makeup artist’s.
“When I go out and do a wedding, I charge for my travel time, depending on the location and my gas mileage,” says Micah. If she’s doing hair and makeup for a bride and her five bridesmaids, she won’t typically charge for travel. It may be a better deal to have a makeup artist do the whole wedding party, instead of just the bride. Ask how the fee is determined and what travel costs will be.
Makeup is a straight service, so it shouldn’t be taxed. “I take out taxes at the end of the year, so I don’t add anything for them,” says Micah. But you will probably want to tip for good service. “Most of my bridal parties are pretty good about tipping,” she adds. DaKyissa agrees, saying that the majority of her clients tip.
Help the Process Go Smoothly On the Day
Prepare for a makeup assembly line. “Have all your girls sitting there for me,” says Micah. Being ready for your makeup artist helps ensure that the wedding march happens right on time.
