Everyone loves to be pampered… and that includes our furry friends. They’re always there to listen to us, love us, and snuggle with us; it’s only fair to return the favor by indulging them in a way that will make them happy and enhance their lives at the same time. Here are 13 ways to spoil your pets and show them just how much you love having them in your life.
1. Make Homemade Treats
We bake cookies and cupcakes to show our neighbors and coworkers how much we appreciate them; why not bake a healthy homemade treat for your dog or cat to do the same? After all, no one loves a treat more than our pets. If baking’s not your thing, then find high-quality treats online or at the pet store. The good thing about cats and dogs is they’ll never know the difference.
2. Schedule a Spa Day
Otherwise known as a good grooming. It’s true most cats and a lot of dogs don’t always look forward to bath time, but a positive grooming experience can actually leave your pet not just looking great, but feeling great as well. Of course, you can’t always take a trip to the salon, but you can hire people to come to you. Plus, your daily or weekly brushing routine is actually a great way to bond and show how much you care.
3. Plan a Luxury Vacation
Even though we’d love to take our pets with us everywhere we go, occasionally there are trips where they just can’t join us. But that doesn’t mean they have to suffer from sadness while we’re gone. Instead, send them to a luxury pet resort where they can get walks, group or private play, bedtime stories, special treats, and so much more. If you don’t want to board your pet, look for a professional who will pamper your pet either at their house or yours while you’re out of town.
4. Spring for Doggie Daycare
If you spend lots of hours away from home, consider taking your dog to a daycare where he can play with dogs his size, go on walks, work on training and socialization, and come home tuckered out and happy. There are even facilities that will pick up and drop off.
5. Get a Dog Walker
If doggie daycare isn’t for you and your pal, hiring a dog walker may be a good way to make sure he’s getting plenty of exercise and companionship (both human and canine) while you’re working long hours.
6. Schedule Regular Checkups
Okay, so Mrs. Whiskertoes may not realize you’re pampering her when you take her to the vet, but truthfully one of the best ways you can spoil your cat or dog is to make sure she lives a long, healthy life. Nothing keeps her on a healthy track more than annual visits to the vet and making sure she’s up-to-date on all of her vaccines.
7. Go for Glamour Shots
Capturing a perfect picture of your pet can be really difficult since pets don’t always cooperate for the camera. Hire a professional who knows all of the tips and tricks for getting the perfect shot of your best friend and spend the afternoon doing a photo shoot. Your pet will enjoy the attention; you’ll enjoy the finished product.
8. Build a Backyard Paradise
Create a backyard haven for your dog, complete with a fence, shelter from wind and rain, self-filling water feature where he can drink, and a designated dig-zone. If it’s safe for your dog or outdoor cat, you may also want to consider installing a doggie/kitty door.
9. Get a Cozy Bed
Dogs and cats spend much of the day sleeping, so let them do it in style and comfort. Whether it’s a big bed with lots of blankets, an orthopedic pillow, or an elevated cot, there are tons of sizes and styles to choose from. If you have an older pet with arthritis, a heated bed will help soothe joints and make nap time that much better.
10. Schedule a Soothing Massage
Back rubs are the best. Plus, massage can help soothe a timid animal, calm a pet down, or help with recovery and rehabilitation and there are certified canine and feline massage therapists who have studied the proper techniques and benefits to apply to your pet. You can also take a workshop to learn how to give dog or cat massages and work that into your regular grooming routine.
11. Plan Activities
Just like people, dogs get bored (cats not so much). What does your dog love to do most? Go to the beach, go on hikes, go for a swim? Plan a dog day afternoon at least once a week that’s all about what your pup wants to do; once you see how much fun he’s having, you’ll be just as happy as he is.
12. Give Lots of Praise and Petting
Praise and affection is a great way to show your pet how much you care (although it’s proven that dogs do prefer physical pets over verbal praise). It also provides positive reinforcement for good behavior and is a good way to connect.
13. Make Time for One-on-One Play Time
What your pet really wants from you is attention. Well, food, your spot in the bed, and attention. So carve out a few 15-minute increments through the day to play games or give belly rubs. After all, the best way you can pamper your best friend is by showing him or her how much you love them.
