What did Americans really get done in 2016? Welcome to the Thumbtack 100, our annual roundup of the 10 key trends and data insights in 10 home and personal improvement areas to show America’s favorite projects, from what’s popular to how much it cost. It also shows what people accomplished and what’s likely to be popular in the year ahead.
For example, when it comes to Home Improvement, decks and porches were the top remodeling projects of 2016 and Americans remodel their bathrooms 2.5 times as often as their kitchens. Meanwhile, ants, cockroaches and spiders are the most common pests in U.S. homes.
When it comes to Fitness and Wellness there were some interesting surprises too: hypnotherapy is more popular than reiki healing, private yoga lessons and acupuncture—and Americans are more comfortable with female alternative healers, requesting them five times more than male healers.
We discovered that candid photography was the most popular photo style in 2016 for Weddings, most couples want professionally produced high short highlight videos for social media—and the top five most expensive cities to hire wedding professionals are all on the East Coast.
We love our furry friends. In the Pets area, there were lots of fun facts including these: one in three dog massages are for households with three dogs (!); residents of New Mexico, Rhode Island and Arizona hire the most professionals to pamper their pets; and more than one in three dog owners want dog-sitting help two to three times per day.
When it comes to Cleaning, Americans are 43 percent more likely to request professional help with house cleaning when they have pets, and carpet cleaning requests are 2.6 times more common in houses with dogs than with cats.
In 2016, memorable Events meant looking good, arriving in style and having the photos to show for it. Photo booth rentals (with props!) prevailed over classic photography. Bold makeup with add-ons like false eyelashes trended in party prep sessions. Also, party Santas? Most popular in Minnesota’s Twin Cities.
When it comes to Lessons, residents of California, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois and New York request the most math tutoring, and the most popular lessons overall in the U.S. are singing, piano, guitar, cooking and swimming. Also, acoustic guitar is two times more popular than electric guitar.
Self-improvement was huge in 2016 as Americans focused on developing better partnerships, careers, and life skills. The most popular ways for people to better themselves for were marriage counseling, resume makeovers and relationship counseling, and interestingly, nine of the top cities for marriage counseling are in the South.
In Food trends, Americans hired lots of event professionals for catering, food trucks, candy buffets and specialty cakes in 2016. American food and BBQ are the most popular cuisine for catering, and vanilla is the number one cake flavor.
Gardens got lots of love this year, particularly in California, Colorado, and Minnesota where residents request the most professional help with their greenery. Meanwhile, other fun facts include tidbits like flower beds are much more popular in the Central U.S. and East Coast than the rest of the country and weeding requests spike in August in the Eastern U.S. but in April and May in the West.
